a perfect nursery
when i picture myself having kids, for whatever reason, i always picture them being boys. not that i have much say in the matter, but i think i just feel more confident in my rough-and-tumble sports skills than any girly influences i might possess. but then i came this incredible nursery from designer extraordinaire, emily henderson, + i'm not quite sure which i want. guys, this nursery is incredible.

A month ago I wrote about the best thing I did in 2013. It's a bit premature, but I'm going to go ahead + say that the best thing I did in 2014 was become an aunt to my perfect little niece, Addy.
Like puppies, I love babies. I would say that I can't wait to be a mom but I can very much wait for that day to happen. In the meantime I'm thrilled that I have a little nugget to love + cradle + then give back to her mom + dad when she starts crying or needs a diaper change.
Only joking.
I've babysat plenty of families over the years but there is something totally different when it's family + when this baby comes from the big brother that treated you so well growing up. It's special + I love her so much. I can't wait to see what kind of tiny person she turns out to be. It's already been amazing seeing the changes that can happen just within one month. This little girl is something special.

The other great thing about being an aunt to her? Shopping for adorable clothes. I might be alone in this but I really love more gender neutral clothing so I went with these items below for Addy's first Christmas present: A snowsuit with little ears because I hate the thought of her being cold. Red moccasins because oh my god. And a white + red (not shown) headband in case she's feeling girly.

dressing the part
I spend a lot of time on the interwebs. While I try not to let myself get too distracted by things, one thing I can never pull myself away from is Halloween costume ideas. I think I'm finally past the days of store bought costumes + instead am going the homemade route.
I've already got my costume picked + I plan to get a jump start on it this weekend, but if you're like me every other year + scramble at the last minute for a unique costume, these adorable ideas from Jordan Ferney might help:

Maybe it's because I was such a stinking cute child (I kid, I kid.), but this article from Lisa Bloom really struck a chord with me & I think it's something that everyone should be more cognisant of. Many of my own childhood memories include compliments on my mini-me looks or being called Miss America & I'm completely guilty of doing this with little girls that I meet. Years & years of this type of greeting will most certainly result in the realization of "Oh wow. Looks are the first thing people notice about me. This must be really, really important." ABC News has even reported that nearly half of all three- to six-year-olds worry about being fat.
You've got to be kidding me.
Bloom goes on to offer some great alternatives for when you meet a little girl. For example: "what book are you reading?," "what are your likes & dislikes?" These are all intelligent questions with no right or wrong answers. They also show that her interests & opinions matter, which is something that will undoubtedly lead to confidence later in life.
Just thought this was something to keep in mind & as Bloom says, "Here's to changing the world, one little girl at a time."

nomenclature

I was pleasantly surprised to learn today that one of my top 3 favorite bloggers finally gave birth to a beautiful, healthy baby girl. Naomi kept the sex of the baby as a surprise & still has the name in the works! She's definitely kindred spirits with my mom & perhaps one day I'll be the same as well. I think it's great to leave so much surprise for the end, but the curiosity just might kill me!
I never heard any stories about my sisters' name, but when my brother was born my parents still hadn't picked out a name. The hospital room had a copy of the Bible & my parents (being the devout Catholics that they are) scanned the pages & came up with John Matthew based off of the Book of Matthew & the Book of John.
The story I have heard about my name is that once again, my parents never really picked a name before I was born, but the family sat around & wrote down a list of ideas on a paper plate. (My mom was 8-9 months pregnant with 2 small children -- no way in hell she was going to wash dishes at that point!) When my mom finally went into labor with me she made sure to bring the paper plate & 'Christine' was the winner. Sure beats out my Dad's preference of Mavis. Yuck!
Surnames can be quite interesting too. I inherited a burdensome apostrophe when I was born into the world. I appreciate the heritage associated with being an O'er, but man can that thing be a pain in the ass sometimes! People can never find my name in their systems because sometimes I'm an "Oconnell" & other times I'm an "O'Connell." A lot of systems are big opposers for special characters & I get to re-submit forms all of the time.
My brother is the only boy in my family, therefore my sister & I will most likely lose this pesky apostrophe one day. Our poor sister-in-law has been an O'Connell for just over half a year now & is still getting used to the impacts.
Do you have any interesting stories about your name? Like/dislikes?
What about babies? I know some girls that already have names picked out. Crazy!

happy birthday, sis!
Today is my big sister's birthday & I feel as though Jason Lee's photography suits this occasion perfectly!
Jason Lee is a father of two girls & a self-taught photographer. He has a wonderful portfolio of fun & whimsical shots of his daughters at play. You can find more of his collection HERE. They put a big smile on my face.
Also, I have to throw in this awesome birthday card that my sister received from my parents. Typically, it's my mom's job to pick out birthday cards & she loves to go the sentimental route. This time, my dad got to make the pick. His card is super cute because we used to have lab growing up & then we inherited a cat & they hated each other. Such a perfect choice!

I think as a parent you probably want to turn your little kiddo into your mini-me to some capacity. I guess the important part is to not go over-board, but I saw little bits of this from my parents growing up. It's no coincidence that to this day I love to read & my favorite sport is baseball. I can thank mom for the former & dad for the latter.
When it comes to kids & interests, there are some interests that can't be avoided. Enter: Disney.
I was pretty thrilled to come across the song "Wishery" by Pogo to keep in my back pocket until the day that I get to brainwash my own children with my parental propaganda.
Pogo is an electonica artist that spent years working with Disney & now has quite a collection of remixes formed from samples from Disney movies that are paired with a few extra beats. Some of his works include "Toyz Noize" (Toy Story), "Expialidocious" (Mary Poppins), "Alice" (Alice in Wonderland), & "White Magic" (Sword in the Stone). The songs are still filled with the whimsy of Disney, but are also more my speed. Who am I kidding? I kind of love them all.

Okay, last baby post, I promise! I'm trying to get it all out of my system in one day before I become the creepy & single 23 year old that is obsessed with babies. Nobody wants to be perceived as that girl.

perfect nurseries
I feel like one of the best parts of being pregnant must be decorating the nursery. You can be as playful or whimsical as you want with the design & it's totally acceptable. I can't wait to be an aunt or for one of my friends to have an "accident" (joking!) so I can buy cutesy little things for a baby!
