i was there : matthew dear

Show: Matthew Dear
Light Asylum

Location: Lincoln Hall

Date: 11.6.12

Favorite Song: I don't think you could have topped "You Put a Smell On Me." That song was just so lively + fun + that was definitely reflected in the crowd. This is probably me being the creep that I am, but I also loved "Shake Me," his self-proclaimed darkest song he's ever written.

Memorable Moment: The stars finally aligned + I got to see Matthew Dear live. I had missed him twice before + I don't really count his DJ set at Wavefront on the same level as his live shows. He is also someone that is meant to be seen live. He hustles around the stage making perfect noise (or shaking his maracas) + has some pretty wonderful dance moves.

Biggest Letdown: Not hearing "Don + Sherri." You always want to hear that very first song that got you hooked on an artist. "Don + Sherri" was that for me, but at least I got "Slowdance," a close second. On that note, I would have to say that two of my favorite album-version Matthew Dear songs ("Slowdance" & "Her Fantasy") weren't as great as some of the others live.

This Show: was a total dance party. I think I expected it to maybe be a bit awkward + darker, but it was serious fun! I will never again miss Mr. Dear when he makes his way to Chicago.
